Angular displacement and velocity
Learn how to describe circular motion quantitatively. The kinematics of circular motion.
Learn what causes circular motion. The dynamics of circular motion.
Types of circular motion
Uniform circular motion
A conical pendulum comprises a mass attached to a string that sweeps out the surface area of a cone as the mass moves in a horizontal circular path. Observe the 3-D animation using the interactive below. Note that:
- the tension can be considered as two perpendicular components: one horizontal and one vertical
- the vertical component of tension is always equal in magnitude to the weight of the mass
- the horizontal component of tension serves as the centripetal force
